Track Celica: Project Moo
2001 Toyota Celica 190; Modern Retro Livery
Project Moo first came to Skewer a number of years ago for a one off livery which has been featured on the site previously. The car was then sold but after a few years apart, the former owner purchased the car back to be a dedicated track weapon. This included wanting fresh new livery. The aim this time was a retro theme using red, orange and yellow stripes, but with a modern twist. We found some images to work with and decided on using the latest metallic wrap vinyls.
Making a Start
Having formed a design work began. The front headlights, bumper and bumper lip, and rear lights, rear bumper and spoiler were all removed. Everything was cleaned and prepared and the wrapping began. Red was going to be the main colour used, with a lower stripe around the front and sides moving up over the rear quarters and tailgate, with the orange and yellow added above. Those elements on the bonnet would be placed in the central recess in front of the hood scoop to use the natural lines of the car. A new custom Project Moo logo was also designed and added
Sides and Rear
Still plenty of wrapping to be done at this stage; the stripes continuing down the sides, the rear bumper and tailgate. An additional factor to the back end was needing to incorporate an already present black stripe over the top and rear of the car, which was painted in so couldn't really be covered. A plan was hatched to wrap 'around' it and make it part of the design.
Home stretch
The rest of the orange and yellow stripes were added, and the red continued over the boot 'cut' round the black stripe. Rear lights, bumper and spoiler put back in and the rest of the logos and design elements were added. The finished article looks superb and everything comes together nicely, with the visual balance low and rearward which already suggests sleek forward movement, ideal for on track.
On Track
Within days of collection the car was taken to Japfest Silverstone to get some track time. The first outing with the new livery went very well, and the car turned heads all day both on and off the track. Suffice to say that the owner is pretty pleased with the results
Past Life
Former livery
Moo's first livery was pretty cool, and won Best Graphics in the Celica Club UK annual awards in its day. The application of the black outline of Japan was the origin for the nickname Moo, with it looking very much like a Friesian cow at that point
Inspiration
An Idea Emerges
This pic of the NASCAR Camry in a retro livery became the inspiration for the idea, albeit obviously adapted and adjusted to fit the lines of the Gen 7 Celica.
Carbon Fibre
Original plates
Moo also wears a pair of Skewer's carbon fibre number plates, originally being made many years ago in the car's first lifetime. Check out carbon plates for yourself.
